Book Review: Gods Behaving Badly

I feel so sorry if I wasn't up on writing anything lately, and I would like to thank all the people who commented about my last post. It just warms my heart to know that even if I was gone for a really long time, you guys still kept the spirit of my blog alive...

Lately I've gone through a few changes within me and my priorities, and my passion for make up, writing and blogging plummeted. It suddenly felt like a job and not a hobby, thus I kinda just stopped writing. But earlier today when I saw all the comments and pageviews, I felt obliged to return all the concern and kindness that you, my readers gave me, so here I am, trying to find my lost fire for blogging...

For now I'll be doing something unusual- giving a review about a book that I once read and re-read, during my hype for all things mythological and Greek...

The thing is, at some point in my hype, I thought about things that might happen if the Greek gods were living among us in our current time. What could have possibly happened? Would they be flaunting their power among us or would they try to live inconspicuously and try to keep balance to the world... Oh wait, scratch that last part, it's meant for the Avatar. :))

As I searched the internet for new books to read, I found a scandalously juicy title that also spells Greek- Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips. Ms. Marie was also probably wondering the same thing that I was thinking, and she saw it fit to explore the possibilities of said situations I mentioned earlier and played around with the intriguing idea of gods living among mortals.

I'm not giving any spoilers on how the plot ends, but here's the best points about the book- and it's synopsis

Being a Greek god is not all it once was. Yes, the twelve gods of Olympus are alive and well in the twenty-first century, but they are crammed together in a London townhouse-and none too happy about it. And they've had to get day jobs: Artemis as a dog-walker, Apollo as a TV psychic, Aphrodite as a phone sex operator, Dionysus as a DJ.

Even more disturbingly, their powers are waning, and even turning mortals into trees-a favorite pastime of Apollo's-is sapping their vital reserves of strength.

Soon, what begins as a minor squabble between Aphrodite and Apollo escalates into an epic battle of wills. Two perplexed humans, Alice and Neil, who are caught in the crossfire, must fear not only for their own lives, but for the survival of humankind. Nothing less than a true act of heroism is needed-but can these two decidedly ordinary people replicate the feats of the mythical heroes and save the world?

  • the Greek gods were given a personality other than being serious about everything and their power
  • the way the jokes were presented through the gods bickering at each other were hilarious
  • It's a refreshing read because the author made me feel that the characters were real
A few notes before you think about giving this book to your pamangkins.... I'll bet that if you didn't see it first here in my blog you'd think that it's an R-18 sort of book, and I'll have to warn you that it somehow is, because there were sex scenes in some chapters that were vividly explained in detail. Aside from that, I'd summarize this fiction novel as a light and comedic read, and Ms. Phillips way of writing the characters and making them seem more real than ever is more than enough to make the journey worthwhile. ;)

I hear that there's a movie being made about this that's to be released this year... can't wait for it! ;)

Rating: 8/10

Cheers and happy reading!
