Mommy Madness : DIY Hawaiian Skirt Costume

Heya! I've been absent for the past few days as I was prepping my kid's costume for her summer school's culminating activity. It was in the Hawaiian Summer theme and Jenae was supposed to dance on stage to the tune of "Tiny Bubbles", but she had a case of stage fright and didn't come up on stage... Ah well, she's still a kid and she'll soon have the self confidence to face an audience...

For this post I'll be showing you guys how easy it is to create your own Hawaiian costume, for your kid or for yourself. :3

For this you'll need:

Untitled

  • Straw(the one that's used to tie up things, and not to drink with)

  • scissors

  • garter(optional)

  • a 2-piece swimsuit(for the top of said costume)

  • crepe paper

  • thread and needle

How to: (skirt)

The swimsuit is gonna be the foundation of said costume, it'll be better if it's in bright and happy colors with floral patterns on it. The top will be used as is, and the bottom part we will be covering with our home made hawaiian skirt.

1. You can use your garter and measure out your waist or your kid's waist and sew it up so that it fits snug. If you don't have a garter, you can use part of the straw to do the same thing, but instead of making it fit, tie up a part of said straw that will mark the start and end of your waist's measurement. Make sure to have loose enough ends that can be used to tie said skirt up and lick it in place later when you wear it.

2. Measure the straw from your waist down to your knees or to your ankles, and then double said measurement and cut it up. Then you have to do a Girth Hitch knot, done by taking the straw you just cut, folding it in half, and place the looped side of the straw in front of the garter of straw that will be wrapped around your waist.

After pulling, you do the process of measuring and cutting up straw to desired length, and then doing said knot  over and over until you have filled out the garter/straw.

3. After filling out the garter, take the ends of the straw that are 'open' and tear them up to finer pieces of straw. In the end you should have something like this:

How to (accessories):

1. Get your crepe paper and cut it out into strips. easiest way to do that is to cut along said paper crosswise, like so:

2. Get your thread and needle and make a measurement that's slightly larger than your head for the necklace. This is to ensure that you can wear said neckpiece without problems later...

3. Grab your strip of crepe paper, fold it in half crosswise and starting from one end of said paper, sew, sew sew!

4. After filling up your thread and tying it up, you can ruffle the paper or turn it around on itself clockwise to fluff it out. in the end you should have something like this:

And you'd just do the same thing for the bracelet, anklet and head piece as well. :) Easy as pie to make!

What do you guys think? :)
